Background information
The nucleocapsid (N) protein is the structural component of the viral structure and it primarily functions to bind coronavirus RNA genome. The N protein is the most abundant protein in coronavirus. It is normally very conserved and is highly immunogenic phosphoprotein. It is also involved in CoV replication cycle and the host cellular response to viral infection. The localisation of N to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-Golgi region has proposed a function for it in assembly and budding. This protein can be used as a marker for diagnostic tests for Covid-19.
