Influenza A
Influenza A viruses (IAV) infect various animal hosts, including pigs, horses and dogs, typically causing mild to severe respiratory disease. Diagnosis is usually by detection of viral proteins or genetic material with serological tests used for confirmation or surveillance. Use of antivirals is limited for veterinary species, but vaccines are widely used. Monitoring of often ‘neglected’ IAV in these species is important as the highly variable segmented RNA genome of IAV can result in emergence of novel strains capable of infecting new hosts and pigs are thought to play a key role in the zoonotic nature of IAV.
